Although the history of North Carolina and Virginia wine and wineries has origins in the earliest settlements, it is only recently that modern viticulture and vinification has transformed the landscape with numerous wineries and world class wines. For those fortunate enough to live in the Charlotte, Triad and Triangle of North Carolina, and Charlottesville and Roanoke areas in Virginia, there is now an incredible opportunity to enjoy a day or weekend excursion touring wineries, a cider mill, a meadery and a brewery, all within minutes of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Floyd, VA. In addition there are numerous opportunities for dining on world class cuisine and resting overnight in some of the most friendly Bed and Breakfast or hotel establishments in the South. On top of this, the views and solitude along the Blue Ridge Parkway and the North Carolina Piedmont are the ever present pathway for your excursion.
If your interests lie in world class Ceramic Artists or taking Scenic Walks, or if you prefer old-time music festivals and mountain culture, then visit Floyd, one of the last of the old-style towns and home of the Friday-night Jamboree , the Floyd World Folk Music Festival (July 24-27, 2008) and the Wine Down the Music Trail Festival of NC and VA wineries (July 5 and 6).
